“Defying Gravity” by Idina Menzel

Perhaps one of my favorite Broadway songs has to be “Defying Gravity” as sung by Idina Menzel from the musical Wicked. And if you are a fan of Glee, then you likely remember the version that Lea Michele performed in the first season of the series (although it was also sung in the 5th season as part of the show’s 100th episode).

From the very beginning of this piece, it becomes clear that this song is all about living your best life. As women, this is a message that we often need (and sometimes forget).

In the lyrics, “I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game,” it reminds us all that it is time to live our lives with our own rules to guide us. Throughout the song, we are continually reminded that we need to stop “second guessing” ourselves, and it is time to reach for what we want.

Even the lyrics, “Some things I cannot change, but till I try, I’ll never know,” remind us that we must continue to try new things if we want to make a change in our lives.

As far as inspirational songs, “Defying Gravity” is likely at the top of the list. And with good reason. This is one piece that truly screams to be your own person and don’t let anyone try to keep to you down.

Whether we are talking about love, work, or following our dreams, this song is a reminder that no matter what we want, we need to reach for it and stop letting other people tell us no or that we can’t do something.
