10 new YA books to kick your summer off right this June
By Lacy Baugher
Rise – Ellen Goodlett
Ellen Goodlett’s Rule duology concludes with Rise, as sisters Zofi, Ren, and Akeylah once again find themselves in a precarious position. Much like another popular YA series you may know – Three Dark Crowns – these siblings find themselves under constant threat as they compete for their dying father’s crown. (Though, admittedly, there’s a lot less poisoning going on.)
But there are plenty of dark secrets, potential blackmail, forbidden love and more in an action-packed sequel. Will the sisters ever learn to trust one another – even if it might be the only things that saves them?
Rise will be released on June 11.
Soul of the Sword – Julie Kagawa
This follow up to author Julie Kagawa’s Shadow of the Fox continues the story of Yumeko, a half kitsune, half human charged with taking a piece of the Scroll of the Thousand Prayers to the Steel Feather temple to prevent the summoning of a dragon. In Soul of the Sword she faces a much more terrifying enemy: A demon, who has possessed the body of the one person she trusted, Kage Tatsumi.
Set in a world that includes everything from shapeshifters to demons to samurai, Kagawa’s series incorporates elements of magic and Japanese mythology to tell a singularly unique adventure.
Soul of the Sword will be released on June 18.
