Emilia Clarke and SameYou have a big donation coming from Game of Thrones fans

SameYou, Emilia Clarke’s charity, has become the inspiration for some Game of Thrones fans to send a message about their response to season 8.

Game of Thrones may be over, but the discourse has not ended on the internet. It probably won’t for a long time, but for now, some fans are using their passion to do something good in the world. They’ve done enough to even get the attention of Emilia Clarke, as the donations are now over 40,000 pounds as of this writing.

(That’s almost $55,000, American fans.)

She posted a video to Instagram this morning, referring to u/elle_ellaria by name:

“It’s extraordinary what you guys have done,” she says in the video. “You’ve given me a wrap gift. That’s what you’ve done.”

More accurately, this campaign originated on r/freefolk. On the JustGiving page, elle_ellaria explained why they set this all up in the first place:

"Since the tongue-in-cheek nature of that petition has flown over a lot of peoples’ heads, to the point that it’s prompted backlash from some of the cast, we wanted to show that Game of Thrones fans appreciate the hard work of the incredible cast & crew despite their constraints. Any disappointment we felt with the conclusion of the series was not in them, but rather in the potential that was lost due to the rushed pace of storytelling."

They’re referring to the Change.org petition, which is still going as of this writing and is approaching nearly 2 million signatures.

Over on the WiC Club, this writer and Dan Selcke of Winter-is-Coming.net discussed whether or not this is a good thing, and seeing Clarke’s reaction, it seems like the answer is still that it is. This is something that brings a positive out of a negative. Additionally, the JustGiving page lists other charities supported by the Game of Thrones cast, including Sophie Turner for Women for Women International and Maisie Williams for Dolphin Project. In other words, there are more chances to spread good out in the world, even if fans are disappointed with how the show ended.

When it comes to FanSided’s overall Fandom 250, this may very well give Game of Thrones the boost in the rankings it needs to get back into the top 10 come the end of the year.

Should the JustGiving campaign reach its current goal of 50,000 pounds, that’d be over $60,000 for SameYou, all in a little over a week. Who’s to stay it’ll stop there, either?
