Chernobyl episode 4 live stream: Watch online

It’s the beginning of the end on HBO’s Chernobyl, as we come up on the penultimate episode and the effects of the disaster continue to spread.

Five episodes might seem a short run for a subject with such a wealth of possible material as the Chernobyl disaster. However, it’s clear as the miniseries has progressed that keeping the pacing and scope so tightly focused is what helps make this show so intense. It’s not for nothing that Chernobyl was recently ranked as the highest-rated TV show in history on IMDB.

From the promo for this upcoming episode, it’s clear that the large-scale efforts to contain the radiation from the reactor will continue. You can watch that trailer right here:

It’s an eerie glimpse at tonight’s episode, and the stuttering, flashing quality of the visuals suggests that things are falling apart even faster now. What makes the unfolding of events so interesting, despite the fact that we already know at least vaguely what happens, is simply watching the massive scale of the clean-up efforts even removed from the tension of a narrative. The science and history of the incident is so fascinating (and at times, appalling) that the show can afford to keep its pacing slow without losing any of its dramatic intensity.

I don’t know about the average viewer, but each time I sit down in front of a new episode it’s with a sense of equal parts anticipation and dread. Anticipation for the masterful television I’m about to experience; dread for the next round of suffering the characters are about to experience.

Episode 3 was especially brutal; death by radiation poisoning is a truly horrific way to go, and it’s even harder to watch knowing that the events and people which this series dramatizes are real. And though we’re drawing closer to the end of the show, that knowledge gives little comfort.
