Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger: Let’s talk about that death

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger’s most recent episode took a drastic turn for one of our characters. But was it necessary? And what will it do in the long run?

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has spent most of its second season going for things. Things that season one would never have thought possible.

The most recent episode went pretty dark, from throwing Tandy into the sex trafficking side of the human trafficking ring to Adina casually holding Connor’s hostage in her home.

But what no one expected was for Auntie Chantelle and Andre to have a showdown in the Darkforce dimension.

And I don’t think anyone expected Chantelle to be killed off so easily.

I suppose it’s a good way to show just how dangerous Andre is, even against someone who can truly see what he is and what he might become. But still, it felt a little out of the blue. Especially when she discreetly told Mayhem not to act.

But showrunner Joe Pokaski spoke to TVLine about that whole setup, saying:

"Save for Auntie sacrificing her life and Mayhem doing nothing. It was sad, but she’ll make up for it later, I promise."

It will feel great when Mayhem gets to lose it and go after Andre. But does Auntie Chantelle’s death really amount to anything? Will her sacrifice be worth it?

MARVEL’S CLOAK & DAGGER – “Rabbit Hold” – Still on her quest to find out more about the sex trafficking ring, Tandy takes a dangerous trip to find Mayhem, who may have the answers she is looking for. Meanwhile, Tyrone’s past actions catch up to him and put Adina in harm’s way. This episode of “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” airs April 18 (8:00-9:01 p.m. EDT) on Freeform. (Freeform/Alyssa Moran)

EMMA LAHANA

You have to believe that with everything she’s seen in her life and her ties to voodoo (and obviously the Darkforce Dimension) that she saw something. Much like Doctor Strange seeing fourteen million outcomes in Infinity War, Chantelle must have seen that her sacrifice was worth it… and that maybe her sacrifice keeps that door closed to Andre’s full evil potential.

We have to hope it’s something like that, right? Because if not, what was Chantelle’s death for? It felt misguided, even in the moment. A showdown of wits, of mental strength, sure. But killing one of the more fun side-characters doesn’t quite fit.
