The 100: What effect did six years in the bunker have on the members of Wonkru?

While the fifth season of The 100 explored the results of Wonkru spending six years in the underground bunker, it focused heavily on Octavia. During season 6, it looks like fans might get some other perspectives.

During the fifth season of The 100, fans jumped six years into the future to see what became of the grounder clans and Skaikru after retreating to the underground bunker during Praimfaya. And things weren’t exactly luxurious down there after they joined together and became Wonkru. They were forced to make decisions that most of them would have balked at under other circumstances. Many of them were forced to forfeit their humanity for the sake of survival.

But season 5 primarily focuses on Octavia Blake’s transformation to becoming Blodreina. We see what took place underground from her perspective, and we watch as she continues to make questionable decisions even when returning to the ground. The season doesn’t, however, dive too deeply into individual members of Wonkru or what living in the underground bunker was like for them.

From Blodreina’s followers, we mostly get a generalized picture that fits perfectly with the hive-mind mentality most of them embody during the fifth season. But now that Blodreina’s been removed from power, it looks like season 6 might give fans more insight into what six years in the bunker did to the other characters.

In the season 6 premiere, “Sanctum,” viewers get a touching scene between Miller and Jackson that shows Octavia isn’t the only one carrying baggage from what they were forced to do down there. Miller’s obviously feeling regret about his dedication to his former queen this season, as is evidenced by his apology to Bellamy before the begin exploring the new planet.

During Miller’s conversation with Jackson, Jackson tells him that they’ve all done things they didn’t want to. But Miller responds, “I did things. You didn’t stop things. There’s a difference.” While there’s some truth to his statement, is one really better than the other? That will be a theme to explore this season.

The premiere also shows us more of Niylah, whose presence on the show will hopefully continue to be strong throughout this season. Unlike Miller and Jackson, Niylah doesn’t seem to feel too badly about following Blodreina.

In fact, she seems to be the only person still loyal to her. When Abby tells Niylah to wake all of Skaikru except for Octavia, Niylah only wakes Octavia. She fills her in on what’s going on, and she shows no remorse about doing so—even after the near-fatal altercation her former queen has with Kane.

It’s interesting to get these different perspectives of Wonkru, and we’re bound to get more of them as Skaikru and the other grounder clans wake from cryosleep. Those years underground  took a steep psychological toll on all of them, and it’s only right that we see the after effects. With any luck, these scenes will just be the beginning of this exploration this season. After all, they’ll all be “facing their demons.”
