Is season 8 episode 3 the longest episode of Game of Thrones ever?

While Game of Thrones has never been a short show, the midpoint of season 8 will require fans to pay attention for a significant amount of time.

On the weekend that Marvel fans will have to sit for three hours and change in order to see Avengers: Endgame, Game of Thrones fans will have to sit for a pretty long period of time as well to see the episode which features the battle for Winterfell. According to HBO, this week’s episode is 1 hour and 22 minutes long, which translates into 82 minutes.

That’ll break the record previously held by “The Dragon and the Wolf.” According to Deadline, that episode, at 79 minutes, was the longest to this date. Before that, it’d been the season 6 finale, “The Winds of Winter.” That one had been 68 minutes, so the jump between “The Dragon and the Wolf” and this week’s episode is much smaller.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that we might not even notice how long this episode is taking, because it’s supposed to be full of action. It almost has to be, after two episodes of build up. We all know what the stakes are, and so do the characters in the castle. It’s not just a question of who lives and who dies, but how any deaths might alter the chances for the Iron Throne.

Much like Avengers: Endgame, there will be no breaks, either, as HBO does not air commercials during its episodes. At least with shows like Game of Thrones, you can pause and make your own breaks, but will you really want to? It seems like HBO is betting that the answer will be no, because falling behind on Game of Thrones means that you’ll need to avoid the internet immediately, lest social media spoil it for you.
