Those whose watches are ended
Did you not expect that there would be deaths? What really sticks out about these, though, is that they mean something and fit the characters who die. Dolorous Edd is the first to go, after saving Sam from death — saving his brother in the Night’s Watch, in fact. In the same vein, Beric dies fighting to save Arya and the Hound, and the Lord of Light won’t bring him back this time if Melisandre is to be believed. Jorah Mormont saves Daenerys when she falls the second time, only for him to die protecting his queen — after the Night King’s army falls.
Theon redeems himself as the last man left standing in Bran’s guard, only for the Night King to kill him personally in the godswood.
Most of the Unsullied get slaughtered trying to protect a retreat, but Grey Worm survives. Lyanna Mormont, meanwhile, goes out with a death fitting her status: she takes an undead giant with her. Many of these get resurrected by the Night King, and yes, it’s as painful as you think watching Lyanna open her eyes.
That resurrection ritual that the Night King performs also takes down in the crypts of Winterfell, by the way. A lot of people die down there, as you might have expected. However, undead Viserion also collapses with the Night King’s demise at the hands of Arya.
The last death is Melisandre’s. She walks out. Dawn begins to break as she drops her necklace, and she dies as herself, her great work done.
Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
