Brother’s Keeper
Brother’s Keeper is an older documentary, released in 1992, but that certainly does not make it any less relevant or powerful. This film, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, delves into a 1990 murder that happened in Munnsville, New York.
The murder of William Ward was one that had the media crazed with coverage opportunities as they flocked to the scene. The story was unlike any other, with it focusing on the story of four uneducated and illiterate brothers who were already the talk to the town. These four brothers lived in a rural area in a dismantled little house, practically falling apart from natural circumstances. Two views of the rural family are explored: one where they were pure simple local country folk, and the other, a harsher stereotype that deemed the brothers dumb outlaws of society.
The film also explores the morality of a “pity-killing” to put William out of his misery as he had been sick for a long time. The documentary delves into whether this is ethical or not, and if that is what really happened in the family’s homestead.
This documentary is for anyone looking for a truly unique story about a family that is not commonly showcased on American television.
