The Staircase

If you haven’t heard of The Staircase yet, then you must be living under one. This adapted French docu-series created in 2004 by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade was released on Netflix in 2018, and people are still talking about it.

The Staircase follows the story of Michael Peterson who was convicted of murdering his wife, Kathleen Peterson, in 2001. The story begins as Michael reports to 911 that his allegedly drunk wife has fallen down the stairs in their mansion and died. However, the authorities have a hard time believing Michael’s story… and for good reason. His account of what happened along with the physical evidence the police and detectives discover at the scene of the crime doesn’t seem to match up. So, Michael’s story starts to deteriorate.

This documentary does a phenomenal job of delving into the hard facts of the crime by pushing away fabricated lies and beliefs. It also opens the audience’s eyes to the secrets Michael was keeping that certainly would’ve pushed him over the edge and given him the motive to murder his wife.

If you are looking for something with an interesting story that keeps getting deeper and deeper, then this is a documentary you should certainly check out. You won’t be disappointed at the storytelling or the twists and turns that keep this dynamic story moving.
