The Seven Five

The Seven Five is a documentary that sheds light on when police go rogue and abuse their power to “protect and serve,” entering a world of corruption instead. The 2014 documentary, directed by Tiller Russell, is now streaming on Netflix, and it is truly one you can’t afford to miss.

The documentary follows the 75th precinct of the New York City Police Department during the 1980s, a time where drugs, sex, and crime were running wild in that territory. Michael Dowd, who was arrested for his corruption in 1992, is the main focus of this film. Dowd willingly tells the story of how the corruption within the precinct began and how it escalated throughout his time on the team.

Audiences will be shocked at Dowd’s and his partner’s honesty about their corrupt ways. They share details of their simple theft to their well-thought-out drug trafficking schemes that involved many of the bigtime drug dealers of NYC at the time. One of the drug lords is also interviewed and gives viewers a rundown of how the whole operation worked.

This documentary not only tells the story of the corrupt police system in the 1980s from an inside perspective, but it also does so with the New York locals involved in the story who give extremely colorful and tell-it-like-it-is interviews, which certainly keeps the audience interested.
