This week on Doom Patrol, the team gets personal, especially for the angry Robotman, Cliff Steele.

Horror, comedy, and familial dynamics are inherent themes for the Doom Patrol. The team is still missing one member of the family, and while we’re sure they’ll rescue Niles one of these days, Doom Patrol‘s episode this week, “Therapy Patrol,” focuses on the team’s internal qualms. For the disgruntled metal man, Cliff Steele, this week’s episode is going to get particularly personal.

Regardless of the comic or cameo, Cliff has always been intermittently angry. Acting as an extension of his decades-long turmoil with his identity and managing his rage, this week’s episode will give some new perspective on the Robotman. Seeing as he still wants to meet the daughter he thought he lost in his car accident, we’ll likely see some comedic but solemn obstacles in Cliff’s character-focused episode.

According to the synopsis of “Therapy Patrol,” the team will focus their heroic efforts on a specific member:

"After a violent outburst from Cliff, the team engages in some self-led group therapy – leading to some growth within the group as they are knit closer together."

Cliff is known for his anger. Although his anger is sometimes conflated with his disability throughout his comic book history, we hope “Therapy Patrol” will give the implicit team and empowering opportunity to help Cliff channel his angry in a healthy manner.

Heroes need coping mechanisms. It’s a highly stressful occupation. While their mentor and mental health professional is still MIA, seeing the team cope with their mental health on their own terms will be a powerful arc. Likely, it will also bring the team closer together (and hopefully, officially create the Doom Patrol team).

Niles would be proud to see them working together and trying to help each other, even if they annoy each other. After all, is a superhero team really a found-family if they don’t pester each other while simultaneously bolstering each other?
