FX’s new horror-comedy series What We Do in the Shadows premieres tonight, and promises a much-needed fresh take on the vampire genre.

Let’s be real. We’ve had a lot of pretentious, broody vampire stories in recent years. The Vampire Diaries. Moonlight. Twilight. Even HBO’s True Blood, which really leaned into the sex and blood aspect of the story. But almost none of them have tried to make us laugh.

What We Do in the Shadows is here to change that. Or at least to remind us that we don’t have to take this stuff so darn seriously.

The series is based on the 2014 horror-comedy film of the same name from Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Much like the film, the TV version also uses the mockumentary format and will tell the story of four vampires living together, only this time in Staten Island.

Led by “Nandor the Relentless”, the group has one simple goal: “Total and complete domination of the New World.” But, since the gang has been roommates for several hundred years already, that task doesn’t exactly seem to be going terribly quickly.

The official series synopsis sets up its fairly straightforward plot:

"This mockumentary comedy follows four vampire roommates and their immortal struggle to be cool. When they’re not looking for their next meal, the blood-sucking foursome are stirring up trouble with the local lycanthropes and bickering over housework."

And the trailer basically feels like an undead version of The Office.

We’ll have to wait and see if this kind of story works – but early reviews certainly seem to indicate that it does.
