The future takes center stage on Arrow this week, which is just fine by us. Below, we compiled everything you need to know about the episode.

There has been plenty to like about Arrow in its seventh season, from Oliver’s brief partnership with Talia Al Ghul in prison to actor David Ramsey’s directorial debut. However, what has made the season such a consistent joy to watch, especially compared to the lackluster season 6, is the flash-forward sequences.

In terms of plot, the flash-forwards haven’t been much faster-paced than the flashbacks of past seasons were; they’ve mostly consisted of characters talking, wandering around, and discovering things that lead to more questions. Yet, that’s precisely what makes them enjoyable: unburdened by the demands of momentum, they have room to breathe. Also, William and Mia’s banter-filled dynamic offers a welcome break from Oliver and Felicity’s fraught romance.

They’re fun, which is maybe odd considering they live in what amounts to a dystopia. Of course, one could argue that Star City is already dystopian. Considering none of the city’s mayors seems to last more than a couple years and how often it gets held hostage by criminals, it’s a wonder anyone still lives there.

Anyway, suffice to say, we’re looking forward to this week’s episode, titled “Star City 2040.” A full synopsis is below, courtesy of The CW:

"FLASH FORWARD TO THE FUTURE — Mia (guest star Katherine McNamara) and William (guest star Ben Lewis) venture into the Glades on a dangerous mission. There they run into Dinah (Juliana Harkavy), Roy (Colton Haynes) and Zoe (guest star Andrea Sixtos) who deliver some devastating news. The flash forwards share highlights from Mia’s childhood with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards)."

Judging by that description, “Star City 2040” will focus on Mia rather than William, who has so far been our guide in the future timeline. What little she has said about her past suggests that her life with Oliver and Felicity was less than rosy, even if, unlike her brother, she at least got to stay with them. Will we learn what happened, or will Arrow continue to keep viewers in the dark? There are still six episodes left until the season finale, so sadly, we’re betting on the latter.

James Bamford directs from a script by Oscar Balderrama and showrunner Beth Schwartz.
