“Scars” will reopen old emotional wounds for some of our favorite characters on The Walking Dead, but it will give us some clarification on the timeline jump.

After Rick Grimes “died” earlier this season on The Walking Dead, we haven’t seen him. Sure, we’ve seen some of Rick’s noble attributes in his and Michonne’s daughter, Judith. But we haven’t had any updates about how the group of survivors and Rick’s family dealt with his perceived death, thanks to the time jump in the narrative, of course. However, we’ll get some telling flashbacks in this week’s episode, along with a plot twist or two.

The teasers for this week’s episode focuses on Michonne’s perspective shortly after everyone thinks Rick died. We’ve already sobbed through the snippets of Michonne searching for Rick dead, alive, or zombified, all while she’s pregnant, and we know we aren’t prepared for the episode-long emotional turmoil.

Based on the AMC synopsis, “Scars,” will focus on a new arrival on Alexandria’s terrain, and the episode will also supplement Michonne’s emotional journey without Rick Grimes:

"An outsider’s arrival forces Alexandria to rehash devastating old wounds; eye-opening secrets from the past are revealed."

We already know Michonne will visit the bridge where she last saw Rick. As “Scars” explores some tearful memories, we’ll see some new arrivals and some big reveals. Though the ongoing feud with the Whisperers has grown even more strained thanks to Daryl’s rescue mission last week, Alpha and the Whisperers probably won’t be the primary focus of “Scars.”

With Michonne’s flashbacks and family as a center point for this week, we probably won’t see Rick return to the series, but Michonne and the rest of Alexandria might find some clues that he’s still alive. Seeing as the synopsis specifies that the featured guest at Alexandria this week is an outsider, we can assume the outsider is Lydia as she seeks a temporary hideout from the Whisperers. Because Jesus died at the hands of the Whisperers, that could easily account for the rehashed wounds, and it’s honestly understandable.

The Walking Dead‘s upcoming episode is the last before the Fair and before Alpha starts making heads roll, literally. Though any secrets and revelations in “Scars” might not directly fuel the Whisperer War arc, this week’s episode will be the last time we see our favorite characters alive, well, and relatively happy.
