Samuel L. Jackson straight up trolled everyone with that Captain Marvel reveal

The Goose is out of the bag. Samuel L. Jackson was officially trolling everyone with a certain Captain Marvel “spoiler” he revealed not long ago.

There’s a very fine explanation for why we preface all rumors and potential spoilers with “take this with a grain of salt,” and Samuel L. Jackson, that prankster, is the reason.

Just last month during press rounds for Captain Marvel, Jackson said not once, but twice that Captain Marvel had the ability to time travel. Now, he’s calling his own bluff on the rumor and saying he made it all up.

This comes from an interview with radio station KROQ that Jackson did with co-stars Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn and Clark Gregg, who were as equally confused as fans were about Jackson’s “reveal.”

In the clip, as found by CBR.com, Larson answered a question about keeping secrets for the movie. For her, that wasn’t hard, but she did turn to Jackson to lightheartedly say, “You just made stuff up.” To which he admitted quite honestly, “I made stuff up. I said she could time travel one time… which just jacked everybody up.”

Despite Jackson “blowing smoking,” I can cut him a small bit of slack. From the interview, he explained that some of these interviews would happen after a long day on set. And I get it, after a long day of any work, you just want to go home and relax — not do more work. So maybe it was a bit frustrating on his part, and that led him to come to make those claims.

At the same time, you have to be careful when it comes to the Marvel machine. Telling spoilers about your movie is bad, but I’d wager telling fake-spoilers could be just as bad. Just take Kevin Feige, for example, who’s a master at not revealing much about the movies he produces. When it comes to any plot-related answer, his go-to responses neither confirm nor deny what’s actually going on. That’s the safest strategy, of course.

In the interview, even Larson seemed a tad bit concerned with what Jackson had to say. She mentioned they had to backtrack a few times when he made those claims, so hopefully that was her moment of being a responsible BFF to Jackson, making sure things didn’t get blown out of proportion.

Unfortunately, not all the backtracking worked. And fans, up until this very moment, were left wondering how the heck Captain Marvel could time travel. Let’s just take this as a lesson. If Samuel L. Jackson goes out for interviews for Avengers: Endgame, we’ll surely have to carry a healthy sense of skepticism.

But for now, let’s just enjoy Captain Marvel, which begins its run in theaters this weekend.
