Someone Great (April 19)

The Plot: Three best friends travel to New York City when one of them endures a break-up.

Director and screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is better known to television fans for the underrated MTV series Sweet/Vicious. Now, she’s making her feature film debut with the romantic comedy, Someone Great.

The film looks to draw from the “best friends travel to a fun locale in order to rediscover their friendship and find love” genre of movies, which goes back to the likes of 1954’s Three Coins in the Fountain and 1964’s The Pleasure Seekers. The cast assembled looks amazing, with Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez, Rosario Dawson, and Brittany Snow playing the friends. It also has Get Out and Atlanta star Lakeith Stanfield popping up in an unknown role as of yet.

Netflix is doing some amazing work in the romantic comedy genre, between the YA adaptation of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – which is receiving a sequel this year — and stuff like The Kissing Booth and Set It Up. The company is definitely in the market to revive the genre, and this movie couldn’t come at a better time. Watching these three actresses run around New York should be a blast!
