Pretty Woman – Vivian and Edward

Ah, Pretty Woman, one of the greatest romcoms of all time, starring the queen of ‘90s romcoms herself, Julia Roberts. The story of a rich man who seeks companionship from a Hollywood Boulevard prostitute may not sound like the romance of the century, but it’s essentially a modern day Cinderella — a woman thrust from her life of poverty to the life of a princess, or so it seems.

If you haven’t seen Pretty Woman, first of all, how dare you, but let me sum it up for you. Vivian is a hooker who works the Hollywood Boulevard scene, and she meets Edward Lewis, a successful but lonely businessman who’s just looking for directions (or maybe more?). Vivian offers to help him, for cash of course, and then offers to drive his fancy (borrowed) car for him because he was clearly struggling.

At his hotel, Edward strikes a deal with her to spend the night, but just to talk. Later, he decides to pay her for the entire week. It doesn’t start that sexual, considering she’s a hooker, but obviously the chemistry is undeniable. Vivian’s number one rule, though, is no kissing on the mouth, because you can’t get attached.

Fast forward a few days and eventually, they do kiss, but then things get messy. In a grand gesture to win her back at the end of the movie, Edward goes to her apartment and, like a knight in shining armor, climbs up her fire escape to rescue her and steal a kiss — but he’s scared of heights. He conquers his fear just for the love of his life, and the two live happily ever after!
