Spider-Man – Spider-Man and Mary Jane

Back in 2002, there was no Marvel Cinematic Universe, and The Avengers were still only a comic book creation. But the world was embracing superhero movies with the release of Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire as the masked vigilante and Kirsten Dunst as his childhood friend and eventual love interest, Mary Jane. The movie was a smash hit and went on to get sequels in 2004 and 2007.

Though the movies have many memorable moments, there is one moment that has been recreated and parodied so many times in so many different mediums that it has no doubt earned the title of one of the most iconic movie kisses ever. You probably already know exactly which kiss we’re talking about: the upside-down kiss in the rain.

Mary Jane is walking home in the pouring rain and running away from a group of thugs who are following her. They start to get a little too handsy so Mary Jane fights back, and she holds her own too until one of them pulls out a knife. That’s when good ol’ Spidey comes down and starts taking out the bad guys. When they’re all knocked out, he realizes he doesn’t have his mask on, so he jets off before his friend can see his face.

When he pops back down for Mary Jane to thank him, he hangs in front of her while she pulls down his mask — just enough to reveal his mouth — and plants a passionate kiss on him. It’s a really sexy moment, with the rain pouring down on them in the alley, but it’s also one of the first real moments we get between Peter and Mary Jane, even if she doesn’t know it’s him.
