When Harry Met Sally – Harry and Sally

When Harry Met Sally is another romcom that will never be forgotten, even if it’s celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. The film tried to answer the age old question: can a man and a woman really be friends, or does sex always get in the way? Per the film, they can’t, and it does.

Harry and Sally meet for the first time after graduating from the University of Chicago when they drove to New York City together and Harry was dating Sally’s friend. They discussed the idea of men and women being friends, which Harry thought was crazy because sex gets in the way. The two met again years later on a flight, and the two become unlikely friends when they meet each other yet again five years later.

Their friendship finally sticks and the two hang out all the time, having late-night conversations, going to dinner, talking about their love lives, and all the other things friends do. When the two friends end up having sex, their friendship seems to be broken beyond repair, until Harry appears in front of Sally at a New Year’s Eve party.

Sally tells Harry that he can’t just expect an apology by showing up like that, so he lists all the small things he loves about her, like how she’s the last person he wants to talk to before he goes to bed at night — and he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Sally is shocked, and a little angry that he makes it so hard for her to hate him, but then she tearfully leans in for the kiss as “Auld Lang Syne” plays in the background.
