Diggle and Lyla wander into precarious territory with a new Suicide Squad on this week’s episode of Arrow directed by David Ramsey.

Might Arrow be fun again? The CW’s original DC superhero series has always treaded the line between escapism and melodrama, but for a while, it seemed to forget about the first part of the equation, straining to contrive conflict instead of letting it arise organically from the characters’ situations. Last week’s midseason premiere, which followed a promising midseason finale, gave us a reason to hope the show has at last gotten a handle on its tone.

It wasn’t a particularly eventful episode. Oliver spent most of it in his and Felicity’s apartment, reeling from the revelation that he has a half-sister; only in the closing moments did the Queen siblings meet. What will they say to each other?

Given that Emiko has spent the past few months on a quest for revenge and resents her father for abandoning her and her mother, don’t expect a cheerful family reunion. On the bright side, though, at least the Oliver meeting her is one mature enough to understand her point of view.

An even more exciting development is ARGUS’s resurrection of the Suicide Squad, now called the Ghost Initiative. In addition to the inevitable conflict that will exist between Diggle and Lyla and the criminals under their supervision, the Ghost Initiative will throw a wrench into Diggle and Lyla’s relationship with each other, if the latter’s reaction to her husband’s suggestion is any indication. I’m not entirely sure I buy the comparison between Diggle and Amanda Waller, but I’m nonetheless intrigued by this development.

Lyla, it seems, isn’t the only one with qualms about the Ghost Initiative. Below is the synopsis for this week’s episode, titled “Past Sins”:

"The past comes back to haunt both Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Laurel (Katie Cassidy). Curtis (Echo Kellum) is upset when he discovers that Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla (guest star Audrey Marie Anderson) have restarted The Ghost Initiative with Diaz (guest star Kirk Acevedo), China White (guest star Kelly Hu), Kane Wolfman (guest star Liam Hall) and Carrie Cutter (guest star Amy Gumenick)."

Curtis was mostly absent from “My Name Is Emiko Queen,” so it’s heartening to see that he will play a central role this week. As other characters, including Felicity, dabble in moral ambiguity, the tech guru is the closest thing Arrow has now to a real hero. He should provide a much-needed foil to the increasingly Machiavellian Diggle and Lyla, not to mention a source of levity.

David Ramsey makes his directorial debut with a script by Onalee Hunter Hughes and Tonya Kong.
