How will Kara and Alex deal with their dramatically altered relationship? Find out below how to watch this week’s Supergirl episode, “Blood Memory.”
Talk about throwing us into the deep end. Supergirl returned from its winter hiatus last Sunday with an episode that seemed like a routine case-of-the-week, only to culminate in an unexpected gut-punch of a twist.
Long story short: in order to foil Colonel Haley’s efforts to discover Supergirl’s identity, Alex agreed to let J’onn erase all of her memories related to her knowledge of Kara’s alter ego. Given that Alex has known about Kara’s alien origins since they met as kids, this means erasing not only a substantial portion of Alex’s life but also her closest, most enduring relationship. Episode director Rachel Talalay and actors Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh pulled no punches when it came to conveying the gravity of Alex’s decision.
How will this affect the dynamic between the Danvers sisters? Alex still knows Kara as her sister, even if she isn’t aware of her being Supergirl, so at least the situation shouldn’t be quite as dire as what we saw in “Elseworlds.” But expect lots of tension between the characters in the coming weeks. Frankly, we’re kind of excited.
Judging by the official synopsis, this week’s episode, titled “Blood Memory,” will have plenty going on in addition to showing the aftermath of the midseason premiere. You can read the full description below, courtesy of The CW:
"KATE BURTON GUEST STARS; NIA AND KARA VISIT NIA’S HOMETOWN — Kara (Melissa Benoist) joins Nia (Nicole Maines) on a trip to Nia’s hometown to visit her family during the town’s annual Harvest Festival. While home, Nia’s mother (guest star Kate Burton) encourages her daughter to embrace her destiny. Meanwhile, Alex (Chyler Leigh) deals with a street drug that is turning people violent and giving them temporary superpowers."
Unfortunately, Nia’s storyline got a bit lost in the shuffle last week, so we look forward to seeing her get the spotlight. Is it too much to hope for some levity? The episode title sounds ominous, to be sure, but we’re also one step closer to having the first-ever transgender superhero on TV.
Shannon Kohli directs from a script by Jessica Queller and Dana Horgan.
