Angela and Jordan – My So-Called Life
What you need to know: Despite this show’s very short-lived, one-season run, it needs very little explanation for viewers of a certain age. For a generation, Angela and Jordan were living out our own private relationship struggles, and we looked to her for cues about how to handle our insane crushes on the high school brooder and taming our intense social awkwardness.
For those of you too young to remember when My So-Called Life originally aired, you may have caught its nostalgia run on MTV not too long ago. Either way, fans can’t deny the adolescent magic this show captured when teenagers actually looked like teenagers on our shows and acted accordingly.
Why we ‘ship them so hard: Angela Chase is all of us. She has a very intense crush on a boy who didn’t know she was alive and, whom she thinks is way out of her league. Her earnestness is sometimes hard to watch, but only because it contains so much truth about how we love at that age.
A less noble explanation is the sheer beauty of Jared Leto in his shearling/denim jacket. Before he was rocking with 30 Seconds to Mars or acting in Dallas Buyers Club, he was a fresh-faced Jordan Catalano, making America’s teenage viewership swoon with every brooding glance. He’s a beautiful boy, and there is just no denying it.
How to watch the whole thing unfold: It’s a shame you won’t be able to see all seasons of this show on regular streaming services. Not only do we get all the delicious angst of unrequited love, but the show is also pretty progressive in the way it handles the lives of its secondary characters. You can currently watch one season of the show with IMDb TV.
Additionally, you can buy episodes pretty cheaply from Amazon and iTunes.
