Meredith and Derek – Grey’s Anatomy

What you need to know: It would take up my entire word count to run down all the ups and downs of Meredith Grey and Derek Shepard. They have suffered more catastrophes than anyone should have to believe, but still, we root for this couple. Between plane crashes, bombs in the chest, active shooters, near-death drownings, and the death of countless friends and loved ones, these two have been through it all.

This couple, through thick and thin, has chosen each other, offering their sacred vows to each other from a post in-between surgeries. Even though their relationship may have started as Derek’s extra-marital affair, they go on to be the big, huge, epic love story of nighttime soaps.

Why we ‘ship them so hard: I think it might have something to do with how very handsome Derek Shepard is. I mean
that hair, that smile, that nonchalant way of making the ladies blush
it’s hard to resist. But it evolves from there. Fans started to see the icy and hard-around-the-edges intern that is Meredith Grey melt into an actual human-with-a-heart.

I hate to say this about one of television’s most beloved doctors, but Meredith is a little bit unlikeable. We still rooted for her, wanted her to be happy, but we stayed annoyed with her brittleness and impatience (which, by the way, same in 2019). Derek softens her into first, a loving girlfriend, then into a wife, and then a mother, and she makes him check his ego and morphs him into an actual three-dimensional human, flaws and all.

How to watch it all unfold: Still going strong in its 17th season, it’s going to take you a minute to get through it all. But I don’t know your life, so get yourself to Netflix and start binging Grey’s Anatomy as your life depends on it.
