Ian and Mickey – Shameless

What you need to know: This is not your ordinary love story. This is not hearts and flowers or warm and fuzzy, but it’s beautiful, raw, and hard to watch. Shameless is known for taking a close and unflinching look at the working class of Chicago’s South Side, but its portrayal of the same-sex relationship quickly became one of the best parts of the show.

Ian Gallagher, the most level-headed sibling of the Gallagher clan, fell deeply and dangerously in love with his neighbor and friend, Ian Milkovich. Although both men grew up poor, Ian’s childhood was awful and abusive, and he sought out love and support from Ian. These two are rarely tender with each other, but their love story is among the most poignant on the list.

Why we ‘ship them so hard: Although they often come to blows with each other, and their time together definitely has its toxic moments, at their core, they love each other unconditionally and without qualification. It’s hard to describe how beautiful these two are with each other, especially when you factor in how many times they are actually punching each other and screaming obscenities.

For some unexplained reason, they just work, and their chemistry is palpable. Viewers instantly picked up on this crackle, and they became a fan favorite, not only because they are very handsome men, but because they are soulmates. Everybody wants to pull for the destined and meant to be. Take one look at these two, and it’s apparent these two are the real deal.

How to watch it all unfold: There will be 12 seasons of Shameless in total, and you can watch everything that’s out on Showtime, or the first 10 seasons on Netflix.  It’s hard not to notice how much the Gallagher gang has changed and aged, but Ian and Mickey’s relationship takes a particularly remarkable evolution.
