What you need to know: Once upon a time, there used to be this thing called a daytime soap opera (kids, ask your parents; some are still running). They came on every day, and folks were bananas over the goings and comings of their favorite characters on their daily stories.
For the longest time, Luke and Laura were the main couple on ABC’s General Hospital, and their adventures kept audiences on the edge of their seats. The more bad guys they chased, lives they saved, and evil twins they fought, they gained notoriety, even among audiences who didn’t particularly watch daytime television.
Why we ‘ship them so hard: Unlike most of our nighttime shows, these two have downright apocalyptic circumstances to deal with — including a start that wouldn’t fly if it were repeated today (and wasn’t okay back then, either, thank you), involving Luke sexually assaulting her, but they are the legendary “super couple” of soap operas despite that. Through it all, they work as a team, and it’s them against the world.
As they grow up as a couple, their dangers got a little less harrowing, but they were still a tentpole for the soap, and their wedding was one of the highest-rated events of all time.
