“Halo” – Beyoncé

Just like how I had to include the Pussycat Dolls, there was no way we could leave out Queen B herself. When Bey released her third studio album I Am… Sasha Fierce in 2008, she slayed us all and snatched all the wigs. Impressively, she released nine — yes nine — singles from the album, including the smash hit “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” which will likely play at weddings until the end of time. That single was released in 2008, which means it’s already been a decade. So instead, let’s check out one that is freshly 10 years old, “Halo”.

“Halo” is a beautiful song co-written by Beyoncé, Ryan Tedder of One Republic, and Evan Bogart. The power ballad has elements of soul and R&B, but with a synthesized percussion beat thumping underneath it all. She’s singing to the love of her life about how perfect and angelic he is. “Halo” was released simultaneously with the single “Diva” to show the duality of Beyonce on this album from the stark differences between the boastful, sexy “Diva” and the angelic power ballad.

Anything Beyoncé touches turns to gold, so not surprisingly, “Halo” was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards, and took home Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The album itself brought home a record-setting six Grammys, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, earned over 30 platinum certifications worldwide, and sold over three million copies in the US alone.

Even if the album came out in 2008, 2009 was definitely the year of Beyoncé!
