“If U Seek Amy” – Britney Spears

The year 2008 brought us the return of our favorite pop princess Britney Spears after a very tumultuous 2007. Obviously, the events of that year were very highly publicized, so I don’t think I need to get into the details, but Spears came out on top and released her sixth studio album, Circus. Released in late 2008, the Circus album era continued well into 2009 with the release of the singles “Radar” (which was originally on her album Blackout but was included on Circus as a bonus track, long story, look it up) and before that, “If U Seek Amy.”

By 2009, Spears was on fire. She had embarked on her very successful The Circus Starring Britney Spears tour across the world, and she was ready to dominate the world again. The pop princess was used to being tongue-in-cheek and embracing her sexuality, so her single “If U Seek Amy” was no different. It’s been just around 10 years since its release, but some people still never realized the hidden meaning behind the title, so say it out loud: “If you seek Amy.” It sounds like “F-U-C-K me”, and that was Spears way of sneaking it onto the radio.

When people caught wind of it, some were outraged — mostly just Megyn Kelly, who was parodied in the music video — but most of us just thought it was catchy, dancey, and a naughty way to swear in front of our parents. In the video, it starts with a blonde news anchor talking about how shocking the song title is (guess who that’s supposed to be?) before cutting to Spears waking up in what can only be described as the morning after an orgy. As Spears makes her way through the debaucherous party guests, she ends up cleaning herself up in her perfect mom look before heading out to greet the paps with her happy, perfect family and an all-American pie! “It doesn’t make any sense does it?” says the Kelly clone (an exact quote from the real news anchor) as the video comes to a close.)

It was a much simpler time in 2009, and I miss every shady moment of it.
