True Detective season 3 episode 1 live stream: Watch online
Fresh off of a Golden Globes win, Mahershala Ali is now taking over TV screens as the lead in the newest season of True Detective.
It’s back! (Finally.) True Detective was doing the long TV hiatus way before Game of Thrones decided to take a year off, but much like we’ll finally see more of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow a little later this year, the crime anthology series is also making its return to HBO. But unlike other anthologies, like American Horror Story, True Detective doesn’t do much in the way of repeating cast members.
That means that instead of Vince Vaughn or even Matthew McConaughey, there’s a new lead in town: Mahershala Ali. Perhaps most interesting is that his character’s partner hasn’t gotten nearly the same amount of attention as Ali’s Wayne Hayes. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Wayne won’t have a partner in the season; he actually does, played by Stephen Dorff.
Anyway, as with one of the previous seasons, there’s more than one time period at play here, although they will all contribute to one story. Hopefully, this show will continue to be clearer than Westworld when it comes to what is happening when.
As per usual, the main cast is quite small; Wikipedia only lists four principal actors, including none other than DCEU alumnus Ray Fisher as well as Carmen Ejogo. Fisher’s playing the son of Wayne Hays, but Ejogo is playing someone who isn’t part of the Hays family — at least per Wikipedia so far. However, Hays does have two children according to that same list, so it’s possible we’ll see his wife or at least a love interest at some point.
Here’s HBO’s synopsis for the first episode:
"Season Three Premiere. The disappearance of a young Arkansas boy and his sister in 1980 triggers vivid memories and enduring questions for retired detective Wayne Hays, who worked the case 35 years ago with his then-partner Roland West. What started as a routine case becomes a long journey to dissect the crime and make sense of it."
That’s right: It’s also a full-on period piece. That’s also a shift from previous seasons, which were mostly set contemporaneously with their release years (and flashed back in the case of season 1).
There’s also a bonus for fans. Not only does the show’s season premiere episode air tonight, but the second episode will immediately follow. That’s two hours of True Detective for you — although it won’t be repeated next week.
