There’s nothing sadder than this high-res photo of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame

Marvel released one of its first official stills from Avengers: Endgame. And as we all should have expected, it’s time to bring on the tears.

Usually, the new year is supposed to start out with a bang. We cancel all of the negative energy from the year before, and roll into the new year with nothing but good vibes and great feelings. That is, unless, you’re part of the Marvel fandom.

As much as any person who’s a part of the Marvel fandom would like to enter 2019 with a clean slate, we know there’s still a lot of emotional baggage leftover from 2018: Avengers: Infinity War. And what a better way to draw attention to that emotional baggage that’s carrying over into Avengers: Endgame than to show off a new high-res photo from the movie?

This week, Marvel and Disney released one of its first official photos featuring Tony Stark from the upcoming movie, making the perpetual sadness even worse at this point. See for yourself below. And unless you thrive off of the pure angst like I do, don’t zoom into Tony’s face to see how absolutely hopeless he is.

We’ve said it time and time again, but Tony Stark has really been taking a beating through all this. We first noticed during the Infinity War promos when Tony Stark yet again looked liked he was so over everything. Then, it was during Infinity War that we saw he was absolutely going through it all — with Pepper Potts and perhaps the chipper Peter Parker as the ones who’ve been keeping him going.

Now, since the Avengers: Endgame trailer was released, we’ve seen that Tony will really be pushed to the edge. But in an unlikely turn of events, it could be Nebula who Tony helps get through it all. As we’ve discussed on Culturess already, Nebula and Tony have more in common do you think. Not only are they stranded in space together, but they’ve gone through their own turmoil over the years. Nebula, of course, has had to deal with probably The Worst father in the world and… hey, Tony didn’t have it so easy with his dad either. On top of that, there’s been pain, loss, confusion, and so much more. So if there are any two people who can help one another get through a hard time, it’s Tony and Nebula.

As far as the latest image is concerned, it’s just a small vignette of those emotional side affects Tony’s going through. And as all fans can hope, there has to be a rainbow at the end of this storm. We’re not only talking about for Tony, but for Steve Rogers, Clint Barton, and all the other Avengers who have lost so much through this journey.

Avengers: Endgame is out April 26. While we’re sure it won’t be 100 percent filled with absolute angst like the picture with Tony, we still know we’ll have to brace ourselves when it’s out.
