Doctor Who New Year’s special live stream: Watch online

Doctor Who returns with its first ever New Year’s Day special. Here’s everything you need to know to watch online and not miss a minute.

Even though season 11 only ended a few weeks ago, Doctor Who is back to kick off 2019 with its first ever New Year’s special.

(Yes, there really wasn’t a Christmas special this year for the first time in over a decade and I still feel weird about that, thanks for asking.)

On the plus side, the Doctor Who New Year’s Day installment, appropriately titled “Resolution,” will feature the long-awaited return of a fan-favorite villain. Yes, we’ll officially see the Thirteenth Doctor face off against the Daleks for the first time.

Of course, none of the official promotional materials say that. Daleks don’t appear in any of the episode trailers, nor are they mentioned in the official synopsis for the newest installment. But they’re coming, and we know that because the final teaser for “Resolution” includes the sound of a very familiar catchphrase.

Many fans are likely on the fence about whether or not Thirteen needs to run into the Doctor’s most famous enemy so early in Jodie Whittaker’s run. (Personally, I think we probably could have waited another year or so.) But, at least the appearance of the Daleks will soothe viewers who complained that season 11 didn’t feature enough “real” or “dangerous” villains. After all, it’s highly unlikely that showrunner Chris Chibnall’s penchant for exploring grey area baddies who aren’t necessarily even villains at all would extend to the franchise’s most famous monsters.

But, as usual, we’ll have to tune in an see what happens.
