13. Artemis Fowl

Do the fans of a book every actually look forward to the movie adaptation with anything other than mild dread? Yes, and we’re often disappointed. But despite the numerous times a good book has gotten a bad movie, it’s still pretty much impossible not to be at least a little excited when the next adaptation rolls around.

Now, it’s Artemis Fowl’s turn. Disney is adapting Eoin Colfer’s novels into a feature-length film set to premiere August 9. The books tell the story of Artemis Fowl, a 12-year-old genius criminal mastermind who tries to kidnap a fairy in exchange for a legendary payout. Ferdia Shaw will make his acting debut as Artemis, with Lara McDonnell taking the part of Holly. With such young characters, it’s almost a necessity to cast newer actors, and it’s often a point in an adaptation favor when the central characters don’t have a familiar face to compete with the immersion an adaptation can provide.

It will also be interesting to see how Artemis Fowl’s storyline plays out in a visual medium. It may turn out difficult to find the events of the story believable when we literally see children acting out the parts. But at the same time, the trailers suggest that believability is not at the top of the filmmakers priorities while making this movie, and that could end up being its greatest boon.

It’s obvious that the movie will be visually spectacular; the scenes we see in the world of Haven are an awesome blend of sci-fi and fantasy. From magical bows and arrows to high-tech floating shuttles, it looks like Artemis Fowl will have it all.
