4. Us

After a smash hit with Get Out, Jordan Peele returns to direct the 2019 horror movie Us. Peele was offered a chance to direct the upcoming Akira movie, but instead opted to stick with doing original stories in the vein of “social thrillers.” It’s clear, then, that Us will have many of the same highly relevant themes that Get Out explored so adroitly.

Information on Us has been infuriatingly sparse, but that’s also hardly surprising. All that we know right now is that Us features a family heading to their beach house to chill out with friends; but come nighttime, “their serenity turns to tension and chaos when some shocking visitors arrive uninvited.”

The poster that Jordan Peele revealed for the film, involving a person in a red garment with leather gloves holding a pair of scissors, is incredibly striking, and it also reveals virtually nothing about the plot. It’s hard to be frustrated by the lack of information, however. Somehow it’s so much satisfying to go into a horror movie blind and be utterly blown away, and if Get Out was any indication, that’s exactly what’s likely to happen in 2019.

Us is apparently five times bigger than Get Out, which could mean a lot of changes. A larger scope, more special effects, and more locations are all on the table. That’s not to mention the fact that Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke will both be starring. But in the end, it seems likely that Us will follow many of the same conventions, or rather lack thereof, that Get Out first embodied.
