11. Frozen 2
Sure, why not? It was always going to happen, and there’s no reason why it can’t be good. After the wild popularity of the first Frozen, there’s a lot of directions the sequel could go. Co-director Chris Buck teased that Elsa is in for some big changes this movie. Many fans have been clamoring for Elsa to become Disney’s first gay princess—there were many elements of her character development in the first movie, going from feeling ashamed of who she is and then finally learning to embrace it openly, which would have suited a gay character quite nicely.
However, Frozen 2’s other director Jennifer Lee’s carefully vague response is pretty much a guarantee that it won’t be on the table this time around. As frustrating as it is to continue to wait for Disney to get with the program and include better gay representation, it could ultimately be more meaningful if the first gay princess’s sexuality was introduced in a first feature film where they could develop everything from the ground up rather than relegating it to a sequel. Then again, rumors have also included a love story for Olaf, which sounds incredibly awful. No matter what happens in the sequel, let’s all hope it’s anything but that.
One interesting fact about the storyline: apparently the writers came up with the ending first, and worked their way backwards from there. Who knows what that will ultimately mean for the events of the plot itself, but it seems like a good sign that the creators knew exactly where they were taking the story from the beginning. With any luck it will lead to a tightly written plot with the kind of deliberate character arc that continues to make Disney movies so affecting.
