Alone on Christmas Day? 10 movies to watch plus their perfect snack pairings
When you’re Home Alone, get cookies and milk
If you’ve held off watching Home Alone because you think it’s a film just for kids, you’re missing out on a very funny movie. It’s the film where Macaulay Culkin famously screamed over aftershave lotion, where Catherine O’Hara has a touching scene with John Candy, and where John Heard had one of his more light-hearted roles.
Home Alone focuses on Kevin (Culkin), an adorable, fresh-faced 8-year-old who just can’t seem to get the recognition he feels he deserves in a big family. So when his family accidentally leaves Kevin home alone as they head off to Paris for a Christmas vacation, the little boy at first is delighted.
But oh, there’s trouble ahead, in the form of two very evil (and luckily not overly intelligent) burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). Heard plays Kevin’s dad, while O’Hara is his worried mother.
Culkin earned a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for his role. And if you love Home Alone, we’ve got good news to cheer your Christmas Day alone: The movie was such a success that it resulted in four sequels. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York includes the entire original cast playing the same roles.
We’re recommending that you snack on cookies and milk in honor of this film, as the snack is actually part of Home Alone. Kevin put out cookies and milk for Santa Claus and is sad to see that the jolly fellow didn’t show up to partake of the treats.
But you can be your own Santa by enjoying a snack such as milk and Oreo cookies (go ahead and dunk all you want — just another advantage of being home alone!).
