What’s next for Riverdale after all of those mid-season finale cliffhangers?

A lot happened in the Riverdale mid-season finale, including the introduction of Jughead’s mom, Gladys. But it’s the cliffhangers we are stuck on.

When it comes to episodes of Riverdale, we expect a lot to happen. There is always something that draws you in and keeps you watching. And in the mid-season finale, we got plenty of things that had our attention, but it is the cliffhangers that we can’t get over.

From Hiram Lodge standing in his office speaking to the Gargoyle King, to Jughead and FP being trapped outside of town because of the quarantine in place, there were a lot of open-ended storylines leading into the show’s winter break.

Per Entertainment Weekly, who spoke with executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, it seems that there is a greater reason for the quarantine than just keeping Jughead, FP, and Archie out-of-town. Riverdale‘s EP explains, “We landed on the idea of a quarantine and building to that for a midseason finale so that when we would come back from that it would be a very changed Riverdale.”

A quarantine change people? You think?

We’ll easily see a difference in how people act towards each other in the town, and how Hiram Lodge, who has been pulling all the villainous strings, has impacted the town. Aguirre-Sacasa says when Riverdale returns, we will see a major change in the way things are run.

“It’s almost like a town under occupation. It’s very totalitarian. It’s very lawless. And there are a lot of people who are really scared,” Aguirre-Sacasa shares.

What does this mean for Archie and the gang? We have no clue, but it probably won’t be good. And the fact that Archie is still on a quest by himself certainly isn’t helping with the answers. Plus, Jughead and FP are trapped outside the quarantine area, and Betty is with Ethel trying to save the girls from the Sisters and the game they have been playing.

Basically, there is a lot happening — but that’s nothing really new for this show now is it? The added bonus right now is we know for a fact Hiram is as much a part of the Gryphons and Gargoyles game as anyone else.

Riverdale is at a crossroads, which makes sense, considering all of the plot points that seem to be converging. And not only are we eager to find out more about the quarantine and what it means for the people of the town, but we also want to know more about Hiram’s connection to the Gargoyle King.

Of course, we also want to know exactly who the Gargoyle King is too. But the problem is that we aren’t even sure if he actually exists or if this Gargoyle King is a drug-induced haze. Would Hiram Lodge actually dabble into his own supply? He’s pretty dark, but he’s also very much a control freak, so it’s hard to imagine he’d allow himself to become weak thanks to being under the influence.

We’ll have to wait until the middle of January to find answers to these questions, but we are definitely eager to see what comes next.

Riverdale returns Wednesday, January 16 at 8/7 p.m. CT on The CW.
