7. Mission Impossible: Fallout

At its sixth installment of the Mission Impossible movies, the franchise is certainly not slowing down. Many reviewers hailed Fallout as the best in the series so far, and with a 97% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s easy to see why. On top of that, MI: Fallout had not only the biggest opening weekend of all the Mission Impossible films, it also did exceedingly well in its total domestic profits. At the end of its theater run it took $220 million, making it the highest grossing film in the franchise so far.

The Mission Impossible movies have really only been getting better with time, with the ratings steadily climbing from film to film to their apex with Fallout. It’s impressive that the franchise has managed to stay entertaining and relevant even after so many sequels; and perhaps even more impressive that 56-year-old Tom Cruise is still doing his own stunts. In fact, he literally broke an ankle during one spectacular rooftop jump stunt. The dude goes hard. And that kind of dedication to keeping it visceral and real that has made the Mission Impossible movies a continuing success.

The formula does seem to prove that you don’t have to bring exceptional emotional depth to an action movie in order to make it a critical hit, but compared to its predecessors, Fallout certainly manages to touch on greater emotional depths than ever before. Paired with stunts that manage to top even scaling the Dubai tower in Ghost Protocol and hanging off the side of an airplane in Rogue Nation (Tom Cruise really did that, too), Mission Impossible: Fallout was overall a box office and critical smash hit.
