Outlander season 4 episode 5 live stream: Watch online
Outlander continues to explore America’s history of colonization, while Brianna and Roger inch ever closer to the 18th century.
America’s indigenous peoples have been present — implicitly or explicitly — throughout Outlander‘s fourth season. However, in spite of John Quincy Myers’ sage advice, Jamie’s new status as “Bear Killer” and Claire’s encounter with the time-traveling ghost, the show has yet to fully contend with the Native American experience in colonial America.
Sure, Outlander has hinted at the violence and the eradication of a culture, but the series has never faced them head-on. It seems that will finally change with this season’s fifth episode, “Savages.”
Here’s its synopsis, courtesy of Starz:
"Claire’s medical expertise proves invaluable, but she soon finds herself in the role of peacemaker when a Cherokee tribe encroaches on superstitious immigrants’ land. In the 20th century, Roger travels to Inverness in search of a missing Brianna, only to make a shocking discovery."
This wouldn’t be the first time Claire has played the go-between. Her cool head has prevailed before — usually in situations involving warring Highlanders and red coats — and with any luck it will once again in “Savages.” Or, at least I hope it does for the Cherokee and the immigrant settlers’ sakes.
Meanwhile, in the ’70s, Roger is trying to find Brianna and Bree is trying to figure out a way to see her parents. The episode promo features Bree approaching the stones of Craigh na Dun in 18th-century garb (she even has a little cap!), so I think it’s safe to assume she’s done her time-traveling homework.
Really, the only question is whether Roger will be able to track her down before she embarks on her journey. Judging from Outlander‘s mythology — honestly, we may as well call it The House That Aching Romance Built — I’m going to say he won’t. His and Bree’s romance will never be as epic as Jamie and Claire’s, especially if he gets to his beloved before her dramatic, possibly dangerous, exit.
