The finale of this season of Poldark promises to deliver some changes going into the fifth and final season, but what are those changes?

This season of Poldark has been the shortest since the very first episode. Both include just eight episodes. Tonight’s episode marks the eighth and final episode of Poldark season 4; we also know that season 5 is on its way, although we don’t have much of an episode count yet. (Beware the linked source, as it does contain spoilers for tonight’s finale, which aired in the UK way earlier in the year.)

There’s a baby on the way for Elizabeth and George; things are bad yet again between Demelza and Ross; at least Dwight and Caroline are still in a pretty much good place even though they lost their daughter earlier this season.

PBS has the synopsis:

"Elizabeth hopes to persuade George that Valentine is his child. Ross tries to mend things with Demelza. Dwight delivers the Warleggans a daughter and George tells Elizabeth of his knighthood. The Poldarks look to a new century of change together."

That means that we’re all the way in 1799, in case you were having trouble figuring out the timeline of this season of Poldark.

But to get back to where everyone is at the start of this episode, the mention of Elizabeth and George having a baby is pretty important. As for the “persuade” portion of the synopsis, it seems like those old doubts are still coming back on George’s part. Elizabeth forced an early birth last time around; could she do the same again, probably not through the same method? The answer is probably “yes and yes.” Elizabeth is not and never has been unintelligent, and she faces a challenge here, one that threatens her marriage and security, both of which are important to her.

Meanwhile, Ross has a lot of work to do with Demelza, as it almost always seems he does these days. Their time in London ended on a particularly sour note thanks to Monk Adderley, who died in a duel with Ross despite being a good duelist. (Monk, however, was not a main character, so he did not have the appropriate plot armor that Ross does and will probably continue to have through season 5.)

At least Dwight gets to continue do his doctor work. It’s nice that Poldark remembers this, even though sometimes the mine gets left off for episode after episode.

After tonight’s episode, Poldark will presumably return in 2019 at some point.
