4 princesses perfect to appear in The CW’s Nobody’s Princess

The CW is creating a musical comedy series about princesses, and we have a few princesses we hope to see in the 4-princess-strong lineup.

From the princess Rebellion to the classic Disney princesses and even real-life princesses, these women of royalty have the ability to entrance our pop culture news and fandoms. Now that the CW has announced its plan to adapt a musical comedy about princesses, that enchantment is about to get even stronger.

According to Deadline, the CW is filling out its musical deficit now that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is coming to close. The network is creating Nobody’s Princess, which will put a comedic spin on our favorite princess fables.

The upcoming series might share the same title as Esther M. Friesner’s novel; however, the CW production doesn’t appear to focus on Helen of Sparta, who is anything but an archetypal fairytale in Friesner’s book. However, we can only hope that the series will reference Helen or feature her in an episode.

Showrunners Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith, who created Life Sentence, set the upcoming royal-themed series in present-day New York City. Hypable reports that the series will focus on four princesses’ adventures in the big apple. However, we aren’t exactly certain which four princesses or if the series will feature Disney princesses, mythological princesses, or a combination of princesses through history and pop culture.

Including Helen of Sparta as a reference isn’t the only character suggestion we have for the series. After all, we do have our preference of princess pals, and there are more than a few royal characters we’d like to see adapted into this show. Nevertheless, we have three other princesses we think are fit for Nobody’s Princess.

Mulan

Mulan broke gender norms in her Disney debut. Beyond her strong personality and physical strength, we’d love to see how Nobody’s Princess would portray her selfless acts and reimagine her story in modern-day NYC. Still, Disney’s version isn’t the only play the series can look to for inspired. Mulan is a long-standing legend in China and she was first depicted in the poem “Ballad of Mulan.”

Ariel

We can’t leave out the red-headed mermaid princess, Ariel. There’s a lot the show can dissect in the sea siren’s narrative. Her animated adventures with Disney are already a bit disturbing. If you look closer into her original story, written by Hans Christian Andersen, it reads more like a horror story than a fairytale.

When the mermaid-turned-human isn’t tortured by oysters (yes, that’s a real plot point), she eventually dies by dissolving into sea suds. Of course, she could have avoided her weirdly macabre demise if she had sacrificed her one true love, but Ariel took the noble approach and accepted her death. There’s a lot to unravel here, and Ariel is already a songstress, so the series would have a lot to play on with her character.

Kidagakash

Many princesses in pop culture are damsels in distress, and Nobody’s Princess will likely play on that trope. However, we’d love to see how the musical comedy approaches powerful princesses like Kidagakash and Mulan taking on New York. Kida is the warrior princess we all aspired to be at some point in our lives (and still do). While Kida doesn’t have her own Grimm’s fairytale, Nobody’s Princess could expand her story arc and show how she takes on the busy city lifestyle.

Granted, this is an abridged list because there are dozens of princesses we’d love to see on Nobody’s Princess. Whether they perform musical numbers, poke fun at their disturbing and often strange original fable, or we get to see how the princesses brave the online dating scene, we’re excited to see how the CW series reimagines the classic princesses we grew up watching.
