Patrick Stewart’s return to the Star Trek universe as Captain Jean-Luc Picard is one that many fans are anticipating. And now we know how involved he is in the writing process.

When it was announced that Patrick Stewart was returning to his role as Jean-Luc Picard in a brand new Star Trek series, the excitement was overwhelming. Across social media, fans rejoiced over the news, with celebrities even chiming in with their thoughts.

Old cast members of Stewart’s, who starred alongside him in Star Trek: Next Generation, and even one of his X-Men co-stars, offered up their services to the series in a show of support. But it was seeing the actor in the writers’ room beginning the process of putting the show together that really sparked our imagination.

On social media, ideas immediately began to flow as to what the show could be about and things we would want to see. Many of us thought that the picture meant that Patrick Stewart would be helping to write the series in some way, and according to Heroic Hollywood, it seems he has been giving the writers plenty of ideas and insight.

Michael Chabon, a writer on the new series, explained that the picture we saw was just the writers getting started alongside the actor. Chabon explained that for two weeks, they were able to work closely with Stewart and use him as a resource.

The writer explained to Deadline that the actor is someone who, “understands drama and he understands character and can bring to bear on that all of his experience doing Shakespeare and Beckett and everything in between.” Basically, he is the perfect person to have in any writers’ room (not just a Star Trek writers’ room).

And speaking to IGN, Chabon said that Stewart was “really pushing us to try to do something new and different with the character. And that’s why he wants to play it, so that he can play something that honors the character, that’s true to the character.”

We love knowing that Patrick Stewart is pushing the writers to stay true to his character, Jean-Luc Picard. As the man who has brought the character to life since 1987, it makes sense that he would be trying to push for this new take on Picard to live up to his previous adventures and stories. And even if the character will be “having experiences, having adventures, and be put in situations we haven’t seen before,” that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t live up to his roots and the man he has always been.

While we are a bit sad to learn that Stewart is not actually one of the writers on the new series, we love how involved he is in the overall process. Considering he originated this character, he has insights that are priceless in terms of taking a Star Trek hero who we all know and love, and giving him a new storyline and adventure.

The fact that he spent two weeks with the writers as they began the process of putting the new series together gives us hope that we are going to see a show that lives up to its predecessor, while still giving us something new and exciting.

We can’t wait to see how this new Star Trek series takes the classic Jean-Luc Picard and his serious nature and gives it a more modern spin. (Sure the series has always been futuristic, but over the years, the shows and movies have evolved to go along with the times.) We think having Stewart give his thoughts and ideas on how the show can stay true to his character while still moving him forward is a great way of honoring the past and moving into the future.

As of now, there is still no title for the Patrick Stewart-led Star Trek series, and there is still no release date. But considering there is talk of CBS All Access offering new Star Trek content all year long, we would not be surprised if the show premiered as early as mid-2019.
