Star Wars Resistance: Why does Hype have a special arrangement with Captain Doza?

Lucasfilm and Disney knocked it out of the park with this week’s episode of Star Wars Resistance, but one thing we’re still thinking about is Hype Fazon’s special arrangement with Captain Doza regarding the First Order.

It’s no secret the First Order is up to no good. For some, like the New Republic, they simply want to ignore the ongoing situation in the Unknown Regions and pretend the First Order is not a threat to galactic peace. However, for those who live in the outer regions and who work in the criminal underworld, they know better.

In “The High Tower,” the First Order arrives with a much-needed fuel shipment for the Colossus. Escorting them are 3 out of the 5 ace pilots: Freya Fenris, Griff Halloran, and Bo Keevil. Torra is relaxing in her room, and Hype (voiced by Donald Faison) is visiting Aunt Z’s tavern.

In an attempt to get to Doza Tower, Kaz introduces himself to Hype. During their conversation, Hype mentions the others are handling a fuel shipment. Kaz is intrigued by this and asks why he’s not out there with them. Hype says, “Doza and I have an understanding… He understands when it’s them, I’ll be here.”

He clarifies “them” in this situation is the First Order. He clearly wants nothing to do with them, but why? Did he have a bad experience with them in the past? Or is he afraid of what they symbolize and what they could become?

Despite having a few non-human characters here and there, like Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Inquisitors, the Empire mostly had humans in its ranks. Is it because the First Order is a remnant of the old Empire, and the Empire did terrible things to non-human species that drives Hype away?

Bo Keevil is another non-human ace pilot, but he has no visible issues in escorting the First Order to the platform. Then again, our individual experiences are what define and motivate us, so what’s keeping Hype away is something more personal.

Hype’s situation is sort of similar to how Yeager wants nothing to do with the Resistance due to his past. It could be that Hype experienced a tragedy of some kind and being around the First Order brings unwanted memories.

Also, let’s not forget how the First Order is dealing with crime syndicates at this time in order to get the funding they need to build its fleet. It could be Hype knew someone who was directly affected by these criminal organizations, so he stays away for his own good.

Whatever the case may be, this need to keep himself separated from the First Order might affect his potential as a future Resistance pilot. The ace pilots are already protectors of the Colossus, so it’s natural to think they’ll be willing to step up to the plate and protect others from the First Order.

If he doesn’t want to do something as simple as escorting a shipment, then it leads us to believe he’ll have no interest in joining the Resistance whatsoever. If that is where the show is headed, we won’t give up hope, though. We have no doubt Hype and the others have what it takes to fight off First Order TIE fighters when the war breaks out.

In a past Culturess interview with the Star Wars Resistance cast, Faison said, “His character will go through things that make him way more human than he is. Right now, what you see from him is the introduction… You’ll learn more about him and how he is with other people.”

We’ll have to wait and see if any of these future episodes flesh out Hype’s views on the First Order and if he has any potential beyond being a sky racer.
