Is Riverdale new tonight, October 31?
Will we get the treat of the Riverdale cast dressing up as the parents of their current characters on Halloween night, or is there a trick in store?
After a string of three episodes, Riverdale is taking a week off for reasons that don’t seem readily apparent, considering that literally every other show on The CW this fall has a new episode on at some point this week. However, the other shows on The CW air on nights that aren’t Halloween night.
Here’s the thing. While it would make sense to air a new episode on Halloween, Riverdale’s main audience is still teens and young adults, who may or may not have plans to do something on Halloween night. In other words, that could lead to a big drop in ratings for this week’s episode, and as the next episode up is the much-hyped and promoted flashback episode, The CW probably doesn’t want to have this ambitious project look like a flop.
On the production side of things, it also gives Archie Comics (and other people interested in seeing the comics properties succeed) a week to keep promoting Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Riverdale is an established property that can get publicity all on its own (even if that publicity isn’t always positive). Meanwhile, Chilling Adventures is the new kid on the block. It can use the help, and since Riverdale can famously look at Netflix and thank it for the success, The CW probably isn’t too mad to give Riverdale a break. After all, if someone discovers Chilling Adventures, Riverdale is basically the next step in soapy teen TV.
So, no, you won’t be able to get your Betty and Jughead fix — or your FP and Alice fix, if that’s something you’re into — for a week yet. However, take heart, fans. When we come back, we’re going to finally find out what the parents of Riverdale’s latest teens got up to in the ’90s, including apparently playing Gryphons and Gargoyles. The photos definitely have stories to tell, and we’re already into the throwback looks.
Instead, tonight, The CW will ask you for settle for a repeat of this week’s Charmed and last week’s series premiere of Legacies.
