Dr Pepper could be the latest culprit to give away Spider-Man spoilers

A new design for a limited edition of Dr Pepper shows that Mysterio be will major movie character in the MCU. Once again, even the oddest things can give away Marvel spoilers.

It’s always the ones you least expect who go around and pull a fast one on you when you least expect it. Yes, we expect spoiler gods Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo to give away Marvel spoilers. But never (never) would we have expected someone — or something — so well trusted to give away spoilers.

And that culprit today is soda brand Dr Pepper. That’s right. Sweet, innocent, 23-flavor filled Dr Pepper has unknowingly given us a small spoiler about Spider-Man: Far From Home. The limited edition flavor, “Dark Berry,” has a mock-up design for the soon-to-come soda which seems to confirm a long-standing theory about the movie’s villain.

In the corner of the can version of the soda, there’s a silhouette of what can only be Mysterio (judging by the distinctive fishbowl head), accompanied by the text “Final design to feature major movie character.” Just below that is the Marvel Studios logo, and behind him, it looks like the Spider-Man symbol is there.

Mysterio, for now, has only been a rumored character in the Spider-Man sequel, not yet confirmed by Marvel. So this packaging, even though it’s still in development, could just be giving it all away.

Perhaps Dr Pepper isn’t totally at fault for this design, though. The soda apparently isn’t supposed to be released until 2019. By that time, we might get to see a Far From Home trailer. And we’re sure Mysterio will be a confirmed villain by them. But since this image comes from the underground world of snack enthusiasts, this concept for the soda (and the spoiler) technically shouldn’t be made public yet.

As all unconfirmed news, this still has to be taken with a grain of salt. The design, or at least the limited edition, seems to be real — as the referenced Instagram account, threesnackateers, says they’ve seen the drink at the National Association of Convenience Stores convention. But at the same time, hopefully the design is not just a fan concept. Or hopefully Mysterio’s image is not just being used as a placeholder for some other characters in the MCU.

If the limited edition is truly meant to go alongside the marketing for Spider-Man: Far From Home, then this is a pretty big giveaway. During filming for the movie, there did appear to be a scene which featured Jake Gyllenhaal in his Mysterio gear. He wasn’t wearing the helmet, but the costume looked very similar to his classic comic book style.

So, Dr Pepper just might be onto something here. Once official marketing for Spider-Man kicks off, we’ll definitely have a final design for Mysterio. And the silhouette on the can most likely will be replaced with Gyllenhal’s Mysterio. If a trailer for the movie comes out this year, then we can see what he’ll look like pretty soon. But if not, we’ll have to keep an eye out for those Dr Pepper cans in 2019.
