What magical creature do the Legends have to send to the underworld now? Check out this week’s episode using our handy streaming guide.
Here’s the bad news: the Legends screwed things up again. As it turned out, the dragon that Constantine slayed wasn’t an anomaly, and fantastical beasts have, in fact, invaded Earth through the portal between worlds that opened when the Legends freed Mallus. (Why they’re scattered throughout time is less clear, but time travel shows got to time travel.)
Naturally, this new catastrophe could hardly have arrived at a worse time, at least for Sara, who was on the verge of moving in with Ava. The director of the Time Bureau proved understanding; after all, she is also committed to safeguarding history. But Sara’s decision planted the seeds for conflict farther down the line. Traditional long-distance relationships are hard enough; try being separated chronologically as well as geographically.
The good news is that, at least for now, Legends of Tomorrow is as goofy-fun as ever. Last week’s season 4 premiere featured a demonic unicorn that vomited rainbow-colored psychedelic slime on its victims. What shenanigans lie in store this week? Check out the official synopsis for the episode, titled “Witch Hunt”, courtesy of The CW:
"N When the magical Time Seismograph goes off, the team finds themselves headed to the Salem witch trials. Sara (Caity Lotz) notices that Zari (Tala Ashe) is taking this case personally when she promises to save a mom, who is being accused of being a witch. However, the team quickly learns that there is a magical creature in the town creating problems they hadn’t been expecting. Meanwhile, Nate (Nick Zano) and Ava (Jes Macallan) work together to try to keep their Time Bureau funding by proving to them that magic exists."
This isn’t Sara’s first witch trial. Back at the beginning of season 2 when Rip scattered the team, she landed in Puritan America and seduced a number of the local women, drawing accusations of witchcraft as a result. (To be fair, time travel basically counts as a form of sorcery.) Legends of Tomorrow isn’t shy about commenting on social issues, and 17th century Salem should provide a prime opportunity.
Based on the synopsis, though, Sara won’t be the one courting danger this time. In one of the premiere’s most affecting scenes, Zari found her mother in 2018 and told Ray about her struggles with survivor’s guilt. Was that scene setting up a longer arc for Zari?
Kevin Mock directs from a script by Keto Shimizu and Matthew Maala.
