With a pair of wildly entertaining seasons, Legends of Tomorrow has ascended from oddity to must-watch. Can the show sustain its momentum?

Beebo was a double-edged sword. On one hand, the sight of a giant, squeaky-voiced stuffed toy charging into battle is likely seared into the mind of anybody lucky enough to witness it. On the other hand, Legends of Tomorrow now faces the challenge of trying to top the sight of a giant, squeaky-voiced stuffed toy charging into battle. Is that even possible?

Still, the show, like its misfit heroes, has never been one to balk from a challenge. As the saying goes, sometimes you screw things up for the better. And regardless, the ride should be fun.

For season 4, the Legends boldly go where many fantasies have gone before. Read The CW’s synopsis for the premiere, titled “The Virgin Gary”, below:

"After the Legends defeated Mallus and wiped the final anachronism from time, they find themselves in unfamiliar territory with the Time Bureau. All that changes when Constantine (Matt Ryan) informs Sara (Caity Lotz) of a new magical threat that leads the team to Woodstock. Constantine thinks he knows how to defeat the new threat, but will need the help of the team and their special klepto talents to help with his spell. Meanwhile, Nate (Nick Zano) and Rory (Dominic Purcell) go on an adventure leaving Nate facing someone from his past."

Last season, Legends of Tomorrow dabbled in the supernatural, alternating between fights with demons from alternate universes and (relatively) more grounded historical anachronisms. If this were any other show, the introduction of fairy-tale creatures would trigger alarm bells. But part of LoT’s charm lies in its expert balancing skills. Because their circumstances are so outlandish, the characters are free to be human.

Also, it’s hard to see a downside to having Constantine around more often. Hopefully, his brogue and eyebrows will be enough to fill the trench coat-shaped hole left by Rip (R.I.P.).

As for the mysterious person from Nate’s past, we’re placing bets on Charlie, who will bear a suspicious resemblance to Amaya. While the Zambesi sorcerer will be missed, her parting with Nate was perfect, and bringing her back again would run the risk of going to the well too many times. This allows actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers to remain onboard without undermining the story.

The premiere is directed by Gregory Smith and written by Phil Klemmer and Grainne Godfree.
