In last week’s promising season premiere, Supergirl eased into a new status quo before blowing it up with a major revelation. What happens next?

Season 4 of Supergirl finds all of the characters in different places. Alex runs the DEO. Winn is off planet, solving future problems with the Legionnaires. J’onn is getting his first taste of life as a civilian, testing a new philosophy of nonviolence. And Kara, at last, feels confident in all her abilities – superhero and human.

Perhaps because it had to deal with so much change, “American Alien” was a relatively low-key hour. There were no mystical cults or interstellar voyages, no love triangles or melodrama. It was exactly what the show needed: a return to the humor and character-centric focus that made it so enjoyable in the first place. And it was exactly what we needed to get back on board.

The challenge, of course, is keeping it up. Based on the official synopsis, this week’s episode, titled “Fallout”, will continue where “American Alien” left off, with President Marsdin being publically outed as an alien. Unfortunately, we don’t foresee National City reacting well to the news. You can read the full synopsis below, courtesy of The CW:

"CHAOS IN NATIONAL CITY — A shocking revelation causes chaos in National City. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) sets out to capture Mercy Graves (guest star Rhona Mitra), while Alex (Chyler Leigh) takes control at the DEO. Back at CatCo, Kara decides to write an investigative story on Mercy and asks Lena (Katie McGrath) if she can interview her as Mercy has ties to the Luthors. Meanwhile, Brainy (Jesse Rath) meets Nia (Nicole Maines) and the two end up in a precarious situation."

Right away, the Kara/Lena plot triggers an alarm. Kara constantly using Lena as a source for her journalism is one of Supergirl’s more maddening tics. Has CatCo not heard of the term “conflict of interest”? On the bright side, though, Brainy and Nia should be an interesting pairing, to say the least. Will this set Nia on the path to revealing her own superpowers? (That said, if the show takes its time with that reveal, we won’t complain. It’s refreshing to see Kara interacting with a character who knows her as Kara rather than Supergirl.)

Plus, there’s a lot of James in the promotional images, which can never be a bad thing.

Harry Jierjian directs the episode from a story by Dana Horgan and a teleplay by Maria Maggenti and Daniel Beaty.
