Meet the Bent-Neck Lady
In the first episode, we’ll admit that there are actually a few different moments that give us the chills, setting the stage for a series that actually delivers on its promises (for the most part). And one of those moments came relatively early. After opening with a scene that proves that there really would be ghosts in Hill House, we get to see a few more moments of ghostly hauntings.
One of those moments comes when a young Nell chooses not to sleep in her bedroom because of a ghostly figure that keeps interrupting her night. After her father heads to bed and her mom falls asleep on the floor next to her, we see Olivia get up and kiss her sleeping daughter before leaving the room. And that’s when we see Nell open her eyes only to find something that clearly leaves her terrified.
As the camera pans back, we get our first glimpse at something that is clearly not a pleasant entity. The floating black figure hovering over the young Nell does not seem like a nice ghost, and while we knew it had to be coming, it’s still a moment that brings the chill factor we were waiting for from the very beginning.
This is a haunting moment that proves without a doubt that there is clearly something spooky about Hill House. And not only is it a thrill to see, but it also serves as an indicator that viewers will definitely be seeing more ghosts along the way. (And can we just point out that seeing this scene again during the Nell-centric episode did not make it any less creepy or scary?)
