Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen tease what they know about Avengers 4

Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen discussed their MCU characters plus small teasers for Avengers 4 this weekend at ACE Comic Con in Chicago.

The God of Mischief and Scarlet Witch might not have shared any screentime together in the MCU, but that didn’t stop Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen from having a little fireside (in this cas, panel side) chat about their two characters at ACE Comic Con in Chicago over the weekend.

Of course, fans were eager to learn what the future had in store for the two characters. After all, they both technically “died” in Infinity War. Loki being outright killed by Thanos, and Scarlet Witch being blown away by Thanos’ snap.

So, is Loki really dead? Hiddleston recalled a fan theory from someone that made it sound very plausible that Loki might actually still be alive. “I was at a park in London a few days ago and some guys came to say ‘Hi’ and they asked me the same question… They said: ‘Hey, all the other times Loki’s died, he stabs with his right hand. Now he’s stabbing with his right hand.'”

“That’s an incredible attention to detail,” Hiddleston admitted. But ultimately, like all who keep mum about Marvel’s secrets, he could only conclude, “Your guess is as good as mine.”

Hiddleston also discussed the emotional connection Loki shared with Scarlet Witch. “The Mind Stone is the thing that connects the two. There’s also a sense of sacrifice,” Hiddleston explained, touching on the sacrifice that Loki makes for Thor, and the sacrifice that Scarlet Witch makes for Vision.

Adding to that, Elizabeth Olsen had a word of caution for anybody excited about Avengers 4. “It only gets worse from here,” she revealed.

While she didn’t explain what she meant by that, it only seems to be confirming our biggest fears about the rumored deaths in the movie. While it’s more than likely that everyone taken away by Thanos’ snap will return, some have feared that Captain America (or possibly even Tony Stark) will be the one to die by the end of the movie.

Outside of what they could briefly share about the future of the MCU, the two also discussed the nuances of their characters and learned a thing or two about each of them. Olsen, for example, admitted that she hadn’t known Loki was a figure outside of the Marvel comics and actually existed in Norse mythology. Hiddleston was more than delighted to break down his character, even talking about how Loki is very much gender-fluid and pansexual.

“He’s not even gendered, really,” Hiddleston explained. “He could be a man or a woman. There’s a lady Loki, there’s a kid Loki.”

Olsen then asked what was on everybody’s mind. “Are you going to a Loki that’s not an archetypal male?” And to that, Hiddleston replied by saying he’s all down for a story like that, but he’s probably not the person to do it.

Even though Olsen might not have known a lot about Loki, she really did her homework for Scarlet Witch. She addressed the discrepancy of Scarlet Witch being a mutant in the comics and needing to change how she was labeled in Age of Ultron, saying it was mostly on director Joss Whedon to figure out how to change things.

“Because X-Men was not our property, Joss had to create a world — because Scarlet Witch does go in the comics between the X-Men and the Avengers. So Joss was trying to create an origin story for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch that we based in our world. And so that’s where it came, the HYDRA-human experimentation.”

Now, with the Disney and Fox merger, the X-Men will soon be able to join the other MCU characters. But given the newly created backstory for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, Olsen’s character will probably still remain an “enhanced” being and won’t be called a mutant.

As a palate cleanser from discussing all the deep and emotional aspects of their characters, Hiddleston and Olsen were asked which movies made them the most emotional.

Olsen revealed Gone with the Wind and Moana were her top movies. And Hiddleston revealed that Paddington and Inside Out might have made him cry — which that’s totally okay, because how could you not cry during those movies?

Marvel might not confirm that Hiddleston and Olsen will be back for Avengers 4. But the evidence seems to show that Scarlet Witch will definitely be back. Set photos plus a newly leaked trailer description hint that we might see Loki, too, even if it’s just a flashback.
