Dancing with the Stars week 4 live stream: Watch online

The picks for this week’s Trio Night on Dancing with the Stars are all over the place and seem a bit unfair in distribution, but surprises could happen.

When it comes to Dancing with the Stars, you can usually pick out some of the early eliminees and which couples might go far based on partners and previous experience. There’s a definite distribution of talent, in other words.

For this week’s trio dances, it seems like that same distribution of talent has reared its head again. Some of the trio partners have never danced on the show before; some are professional dancers; some are previous champions or runners-up of the show.

Look, it might make the show more interesting to bring in old stars, but it seems fairer to have pros and troupe dancers as the third partner.

Regardless, per ABC, here’s what to expect in tonight’s show:

Argentine tango

"John Schneider and Emma Slater with NSYNC band member and season 4 runner-up Joey Fatone: “Torn,” Nathan Lanier"

This is a weird combination.

Cha cha

"Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess with violinist and season 25 runner-up Lindsey Stirling: “U Can’t Touch This,” MC HammerJuan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke with all-star season Mirrorball Trophy winner Melissa Rycroft: “Wavey,” CliQ featuring Alika"

How has Juan Pablo Di Pace not done a cha cha yet? Moreover, what will be the score differential be, I wonder?

Charleston

"Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber with fellow Olympian and season 20 star Nastia Liukin: “V.E.S.P.A.,” Dimie Cat"

See, this makes sense. Two gymnasts get to do an athletic, often acrobatic dance.

Paso doblé

"DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold with fellow football player and season 24 winner Rashad Jennings: “Fire,” Barns Courtney"

This also makes sense, even though it’s a shame not to get to see Rashad Jennings dance with Emma Slater again.

Salsa

"Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe with fellow Harry Potter film star Scarlett Byrne (Pansy Parkinson): “Black Magic,” Little MixJoe Amabile and Jenna Johnson with fellow Bachelor in Paradise alum Jordan Kimball: “I’m Too Sexy,” Right Said FredMilo Manheim and Witney Carson with R5singer/Glee alumnus and season 20 runner-up Riker Lynch: “Adrenalina,” Wisin feat. Jennifer Lopez & Ricky Martin"

Do Scarlett Byrne or Jordan Kimball have any dance experience? If the answer is no, then this category is pretty much completely unfair in favor of Milo Manheim getting a DWTS alum as his trio partner.

That’s before you even get to the fact that this is a salsa. It’s not a particularly easy dance, and the second partner adds a higher degree of difficulty. Expect Milo and Witney to take the top score in this category, followed by Evanna and Keo and then Joe and Jenna.

Tango

"Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten with dancer/actress/model Maddie Ziegler: “Move Your Body,” SiaTinashe and Brandon Armstrong with Paralympic medalist and season 18 runner-up Amy Purdy: “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” from Rock of Ages"

This is not to say that Amy Purdy is a bad dancer. But Maddie Ziegler is, as Tom Bergeron even noted on last week’s show, famous because she dances in Sia’s music videos. As the show has also emphasized several times over the years, music video dancing is not the same as ballroom dancing, even in tango.

That all being said, though, she’s regularly dancing, whereas Amy Purdy might be a bit out of practice. Yes, this is a big get for Dancing with the Stars. It just seems like the wrong time.

All the same, we have a two-hour show tonight and an elimination coming at the end. Expect at least some couples to adapt well and others to … just do their best, we suppose.
